At Smith Family Dentistry, it’s our goal to give those in and around Charleston and Teays Valley, WV the dental treatments and care needed to maintain a healthy smile. From dental implants and cosmetic dentistry to improve your smile’s appearance to regular dental cleanings to make sure that you have great oral hygiene, your smile is our number one priority. Because we’re committed to giving you a healthy smile for life, we’d like to mention that it’s National Nutrition Month. National Nutrition Month is all about nutrition education and raising awareness on the importance of healthy eating habits. While we all understand the effect that eating has on our bodily health and weight, the effect that eating has on our dental health isn’t quite as common knowledge. As your trusted children’s dentist, we’d like to take this opportunity to explain how our diet can affect our dental health.

How Our Diet Can Affect Our Dental Health

What we eat will affect our dental health in a variety of different ways. Here are just some of the examples of foods that can have an effect (either positive or negative) on your teeth:

  • Calcium-rich foods will strengthen the enamel of your teeth. Foods that are high in calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt, and leafy greens.

  • Fiber-rich foods are also beneficial for your teeth because they can help scrub away plaque and they’ll stimulate saliva as well. Examples of high-fiber foods include peas, beans, broccoli, and berries.

  • Sugary foods are one of the biggest culprits when it comes to causing tooth decay. Bacteria in the mouth will use this sugar to produce acids, which will erode tooth enamel. Some of the foods that have high levels of sugar include cake, cookies, candy, chocolate milk, soda, and energy drinks.

  • There are also certain foods that can stain your teeth and make them lose their luster. These teeth-staining foods include berries, citrus fruits, tea, soda, and energy drinks.

Why This Is So Important for Children

The truth is that children don’t always eat in a healthy manner. For most kids, they’ll pass over the healthy and nutritious foods in order to eat something that’s sweeter and tastier. Unfortunately, most of the foods that kids tend to gravitate toward are the ones that were listed in the detrimental sugar-filled category! Because of this, it’s important to take the time to monitor what they eat and make sure that they don’t go overboard on the foods that will be harmful to their dental health.
