You may be surprised to know this, but tooth loss is actually very common amongst adults. In fact, over 35 million Americans are missing all of their upper or lower teeth. In these situations, a person typically resorts to dentures, which is an effective way to replace an entire arch of teeth, but they can also provide many hassles and discomforts. As your choice for a South Charleston and Charleston general and cosmetic dentist, our entire team at Smith Family Dentistry would like to offer an alternative to dentures – the all-on-4 dental implant restoration.  Our dentists work with a periodontist or oral surgeon to coordinate your care.  The periodontist or oral surgeon will place the dental implants with the assistance of a laboratory technician to fit the transitional denture to the implants.  Following a healing period to allow for the implants to integrate, the final prosthesis (or denture) will be fabricated by our office.

What Is All-on-4?

If you’re familiar with what a dental implant is, that should make things easier. If you’re not, allow us to explain. A dental implant is a small, titanium post that’s inserted into your jawbone through a minor surgery in the spot where your missing tooth is. This implant is used to replace the root-part of a missing tooth. After a healing period has passed, a natural-looking and lifelike crown will be attached to the dental implant to restore your smile.

Normally, one dental implant is used to replace one missing tooth. However, with all-on-4, you may only need four dental implants inserted to place an entire arch of teeth! Each patient is unique and the number of implants needed is patient specific.  These dental implants are made of titanium and will fuse to your bone and function as part of it. Essentially, these dental implants will be part of your jawbone and serve as a strong and durable foundation for your new teeth.

You’ll Get a New Smile in Just One Day!

Perhaps best of all is that it’ll only take one day for you to get your new smile! With the efficient work of your dentist in Charleston and South Charleston, your dental implants can be inserted in just one visit. We’ll then attach a set of teeth onto these dental implants to complete your smile. Having said that, this set of teeth that we place on your first visit will just be temporary. After your dental implants have had time to fuse to your jawbone, you’ll come back and we’ll replace the temporary arch of teeth with a beautiful – and permanent – set of teeth.
